Defense Dominates Bengals in Women’s Basketball

NEW PALTZ, NY- The New Paltz women’s basketball team hosted the Bengals from Buffalo State Friday night and walked with a 69-48 win in the Hawks Center.Senior guard Nicole Sarcone had a game-high 10 assists and is 24 assists from tying New Paltz all-time assist record in a career.

Senior guard Maggie Farrell led the Hawks with a game-high 14 points and senior forward Carly Minehan chipped in with 12 points and six rebounds.Freshman forward Alexandra McCullough added 10 points and five rebounds.

Krista Baker led the Bengals with 13 points and Dee Layne added 12 points and nine rebounds.The Bengals fall to 7-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

The Hawks continued their strong play in the second half and pushed their lead to as many 27 points.The Hawks forced 36 turnovers and had 24 steals in the game.The Hawks improve to 8-4 overall and 5-1 in the conference.

In the first half, the Hawks started strong opening the game outscoring the Bengals 16-4 in the first nine minutes.After a basket by the Bengals Erica Derby, the Hawks upped their lead to 18 at 27-9 with six minutes remaining in the half.The Bengals could not get anything started due the to the Hawks forcing 20 turnovers in the first half.The Hawks would go into the break with a 37-16 advantage.The Hawks held the Bengals to 28.6% (6-21) shooting in the half and had 12 steals as a team.
