Women’s Soccer Opens Season With 2-1 Loss to #22 Union

The women’s soccer team opened their season at the Union College Invitation Tournament today and fell to #22 Union, 2-1.

The Hawks controlled played early and found the back of the net only 1:45 into the game, but had the goal nullified due to an offsides call. New Paltz turned around and connected on a goal from the top of the box on a header by junior defender Jennifer Moretti (Sayville) at 5:57.

Union answered 31 seconds later on a low cross from the left side and controlled play for the remainder of the first half.

In the second half, Union’s Allison Cuozzo created her own opportunity in the 60th minute when she used a step over near the right baseline to get the ball to her left foot. She fired low, but senior goalkeeper Sarah Boccard (Washintonville) made the save. Cuozzo connected for the game winner in the 75th minute off a direct kick by Sara Wilson.

Union outshot New Paltz 16-7 and produced eight shots on goal, while the Hawks had two. New Paltz held the advantage in corners, 7-6.

New Paltz will return to action on Sunday when they face RPI at 11 a.m.
