Women’s Basketball Extends Win Streak to Four

NEW PALTZ, NY — The women’s basketball team hosted Plattsburgh this afternoon and won their fourth consecutive game with a 58-44 victory. The Hawks advance to 14-5 and 8-3 in conference play, while the Cardinals drop to 5-13 and 3-8.
The Hawks took a 14-5 lead on a three pointer by Kristen Caban at 13:34. Plattsburgh cut the deficit to four on a three pointer by Jacee Sutton, after outscoring New Paltz 9-4 in the next 11 minutes, before the 23-14 margin at intermission. The Hawks opened the second half with an 11-3 run to extend their lead to 17. Plattsburgh battled back to and took advantage of seven New Paltz turnovers to cut the lead to five at 40-35 with 8:07 remaining. That is as close as the Cardinals would come as the Hawks out scored Plattsburgh 18-9 to close out the game, including 7-9 from the charity stripe in the final 3:17.
Caban finished with 15 points in 5-7 from the floor, 3-5 from the arc and 2-2 from the line. First year Artie Williams added 12 points, nine rebounds and five steals. Carly Minehan and Maggie Farrell each netted seven points for the Hawks.
New Paltz returns to action next Friday, February 8th when they host Cortland at 6:00 pm. The game is part of the WBCA’s THINK PINK week. All fans are asked to wear pink to show their support for breast cancer awareness. Donations will go to the Kay Yow/WBCA Breast Cancer Fund.
