OSWEGO, NY — The women’s basketball traveled to Oswego tonight and defeated the Lakers 76-57 for their fifth consecutive win. New Paltz is now 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the SUNYAC.
The Hawks had 12 players score, finishing the game shooting 45.5% from the field, 66.2% from the arc and 83.3% from the line. New Paltz trailed in the beginning of the game but evened the score 8-8 before going on a 10-0 run to open up the game. Oswego followed with a 13-5 run of their own to come to within two but that is as close as they would come throughout the rest of the contest. New Paltz held a 43-31 halftime advantage and shut the Lakers down in the second half, holding them to an 18.5% field goal percentage on 5-27 from the floor. The Hawks controlled the boards, out-rebounding the Lakers 47-29, led by senior Amber Sohns and Chelsea Clarke who hauled down seven each.
“We really took care of things in the second half and played some good basketball, showing moments of our true capability,” stated New Paltz head coach Jamie Seward. “Rebounding was a big factor in our success and Amber showed great leadership on the court and played aggressive allowing for several second chance opportunities. And Katie Becofsky made big strides tonight running our offense and a playing a more significant roll when Nicole Sarcone is not on the floor.”
First year Artie Williams led the team with 15 points on 7-9 from the floor and sophomore Kristen Caban finished with 10 points. Sophomores Chelsea Clarke, Maggie Farrell, and Carly Minehan each added eight points with Clarke hauling down seven boards.
New Paltz returns to action tomorrow afternoon when they take on Morrisville at 2:00 pm.
