Hawks Fall to Red Dragons 70-57

NEW PALTZ, NY — The women’s basketball team traveled to Cortland tonight and fell to the Red Dragons 70-57. Cortland outscored New Paltz 18-4 over the final 4:35 to defeat the Hawks. New Paltz slips to 10-5 overall and 5-3 in conference play.
Senior Amber Sohns led the Hawks with 20 points on 8-19 from the floor. First year Artie Williams finished with eight points and a career high 14 rebounds. Sophomore Maggie Farrell chipped in with 12 points and seven boards.
Cortland trailed much of the first half, but used an 11-2 run to take a 28-20 lead with 1:58 left. New Paltz, however, scored the final five points of the half on a Kristin Sitek jumper and a Farrell three-pointer and was within three points at halftime.
The Red Dragons led 43-36 with 13:54 left in the game after scoring seven straight points. New Paltz responded with a 13-5 streak over the next six minutes and led 49-48 on a Farrell trey with 7:28 left.
The Hawks still led 53-52 with 4:35 left after a Sohns basket, but Cortland took the lead for good with a three-pointer at the 4:18 mark.
New Paltz returns to action Saturday afternoon against SUNYIT at 2:00 pm.
