Swimming Splits with Coast Guard

NEW PALTZ, NY — The men’s and women’s swim teams hosted Coast Guard tonight and split with the Bears. The women claimed a 116-81 victory, while the men fell 112.5-89.5.
Erica Ellis was a doulbe winner for the women by capturing the 200 IM (2:19.81) and the 100 fly (1:01.47). Her fly time was 1.01 seconds off her school record time set in March of 2007. Ellis teamed with Samantha Graham, Becky Baker and Christine Rieth to win the 200 Medley Relay in 1:54.79.
Jessica Lester won the 1000 free in 11:25.90 with Joelle Hopf close behind in second in 11:27.63. The Hawks swept the 50 free with senior Regina Davide (25.57) in first, Rieth (25.62) in second and Allison Wells (26.63) took third. Reith and Wells finished one – two in the 100 free in times of 56.10 and 56.42, respectively. New Paltz went 1-2-3 in the 100 back with Marissa Morris touching first (1:03.74), followed by Graham (1:05.08) and Tiffany Sorrell (1:05.47). Sorrell also finished second in the 200 IM (2:20.98).
On the men’s side, Matt Demerest won the 50 free in 23.51 and took second in the 100 fly in 58.23. Stephen Cozzolongo claimed the 100 back in 55.76 and touched in 23.56 in the 50 free for second place. David Gardner touched first in the 100 free in 50.07 and finished second in the 1000 free (10:27.24). and . Johnny Fleckenstein finished second in the 500 free in 5:16.35 and Zack Lowenstein took second in the 200 free (1:52.45). Rob Webb touched second in the 100 breast (1:05.88)
New Paltz women are 4-1 on the season and the men are 3-1. The Hawks travel to Allegheny on Saturday for a 1:00 start.
