Men’s Soccer Falls to Union, 2-0

SCHENECTADY, NY — The SUNY New Paltz Hawks capped off their weekend with a 2-0 loss to Union Dutchmen in the Union Classic held at College Park.

The teams battled to a scoreless first half, but Dutchmen Chris Poey (Amherst, MA/Amherst Regional) broke the ice with a point blank shot at 67:23 past Hawks keeper Masanori Hotta (Kawanishi, Japan). The tally was set up from a left side feed from freshman midfielder Ryan Banigan (Bethlehem, NY/Bethlehem Central).

Banigan added insurance as he stripped Hotta from 18 yards out and made it 2-0 with a shot at 80:42.

New Paltz had an 18-10 shot advantage while the Dutchmen had a 7-6 advantage in corners. Hotta stopped three Dutchmen stops, taking the loss in net as Harris Fendell (Short Hills, NJ/St. Benedict’s Prep) made four saves to earn the shutout.

The Hawks will return to action on Friday, September 15 when they begin SUNYAC play and host the Geneseo Knights in a 4 p.m. start.
