Hawks Beat St. Paul’s Tigers With Big Bats

LAWRENCEVILLE, VA — The SUNY New Paltz baseball team struck early in both ends of this afternoon’s doubleheader against, Division II, St. Paul’s. The Hawks provided junior pitcher Greg Campo (Staten Island, NY) will plenty of run support as SUNY New Paltz took the first game 24-0. Six members of the SUNY New Paltz pitching staff combined in the second game to allow four hits and two runs while striking out 12 over the seven inning contest to earn the Hawks their fourth win of 2006 and their third consecutively, 11-2.

In the front end of today’s doubleheader senior outfielder Bill Kelts (Waterford, NY) set the tone early with a grand slam in the first inning for SUNY New Paltz (3-2). Campo held the Tigers at bay, pitching 4 innings he allowed one hit and struck out five.

Kelts went 2-for-3, scoring three times; he collected seven RBI in the contest with the grand slam. Senior catcher Josh Gutes (Hauppauge, NY) went 1-for-2 and knocked in three. Senior pitcher Joe Gugliotta (Bayport, NY) knocked in two runs with a pinch-hit double in the fourth. Senior outfielder Jeff Cote’ (Mechanicsville, MD) collected two hits and scored twice.

Junior third baseman John DeKams (King’s Park, NY) had four hits including a three-run homer in the third to lead the Hawks to the 11-2 win in the afternoon finale. DeKams tallied six RBI in the game, as Cote’ went 2-for-5, scored three times, and knocked in a run. Junior outfielder Justin Buonamano (Royersford, PA) and freshman second baseman Tyler Terlecky (Binghamton, NY) each totaled two hits for SUNY New Paltz (4-2) in the win.

The SUNY New Paltz baseball team will play another doubleheader tomorrow, Sunday, March 5 against #12 Mary Washington beginning at 12:00 pm.

Gugliotta and DeKams will take the mound for the Hawks as they look to upset the #12 ranked Eagles.
