#21 Eagles Blank SUNY New Paltz Baseball in Doubleheader

FREDERICKSBURG, VA — A day after sweeping a doubleheader against St. Paul’s, of Division II, the SUNY New Paltz baseball team was blanked by #21 Mary Washington. The Eagles beat the Hawks 6-2 in the first game, before winning the second game 8-3.

In the first game, SUNY New Paltz (4-3) took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly from junior third baseman John DeKams (King’s Park, NY). Senior outfielder Jeff Cote’ (Mechanicsville, MD) went 2-for-4, as DeKams and junior outfielder Justin Buonamano (Royersford, PA) each collected a hit and a RBI apiece.

Junior outfielder Eric Fitzgerald (Linwood, NJ) went 4-for-4 to lead Mary Washington (8-1) in the 6-2 triumph.

In the defeat senior pitcher Joe Gugliotta (Bayport, NY) picked up his second loss of the season. He allowed seven hits, two earned runs, walked two and struck out two over four innings of work.

The Hawks grabbed a 3-2 lead scoring three in the top of the fourth of game two. Senior catcher Josh Gutes (Hauppauge, NY) cleared the bases with a three-run double to give the Hawks the one-run edge. Gutes went 3-for-4, as freshman second baseman Tyler Antrim (East Haddam, CT) collected two hits and scored a run for SUNY New Paltz (4-4). DeKams picked up his second loss of 2006. He allowed five earned runs, while walking two and striking out one over four innings.

Junior infielder Tom McDermott (Smithtown, NY) went 2-for-3 with three RBI for Mary Washington (9-1), including a RBI double in a four-run bottom of the fourth.

The SUNY New Paltz baseball team will play next at St. Joseph’s (L.I.) on Saturday, March 11 in a 12:00 pm doubleheader.
