SUNY New Paltz Baseball Soars Over Seahawks

ST. MARY’S CITY, MD — The SUNY New Paltz baseball team evened their record at 2-2 with a 4-3 win over St. Mary’s (Maryland) this afternoon. SUNY New Paltz handed the Seahawks their fourth straight loss en route to the one-run triumph.

Timely hitting in the top of the ninth put the game-winning run, freshman second baseman Tyler Antrim (East Haddam, CT), at third. Following a wild pitch Antrim scored to give SUNY New Paltz (2-2) the one-run edge. Senior catcher/pitcher Josh Gutes (Hauppauge, NY), who provided the clutch hit to place Antrim at third, earned his first save of 2006 pitching a perfect bottom of the ninth and leaving the tying run stranded on second.

Senior outfielder Bill Kelts (Waterford, NY) led the Hawks offensively finishing the game 2-for-3 with a run scored, one RBI and a walk. Gutes was 2-for-5 on the afternoon with a run scored.

The Hawks were first on the board with a run off the bat of junior third baseman John DeKams (King’s Park, NY), in the top of the sixth. St. Mary’s (2-5) tied the affair 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh. SUNY New Paltz posted a two-run advantage in the top of the eighth only to have the Seahawks knot the score 3-3 in the bottom of the inning.

Sophomore pitcher Jimmy Donohue (Deer Park, NY) got the start for SUNY New Paltz, pitching seven innings he allowed one run on five hits while walking three and striking out eight. Sophomore pitcher Jeff Stith (Selden, NY) picked up the win for the Hawks.

Junior designated hitter Drew Willard (Leonardtown, MD) was 2-for-4 with two RBI to lead St. Mary’s.

The SUNY New Paltz baseball team will play St. Paul’s, of Division II, in a doubleheader starting tomorrow, Saturday, March 4 at 12:00 pm.
