SUNY New Paltz Women’s Basketball Grabs First Conference Win

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team defeated conference rival SUNY IT, 70-54, to improve to 1-2 in conference play this year. SUNY IT falls to 3-5 on the year and 1-2 in the conference.

With 11:30 remaining on the game clock, SUNY New Paltz quickly jumped out to a 16-point lead with a 17-0, four minute, run. Senior forward Sandra Glazewski (Dobbs Ferry, NY) put together a 20-point second half performance to pace the Hawks to the 16-point victory. Glazewski shot three-of-five from behind the arch in the second half. Sophomore guard Amber Sohns (Delhi, NY) recorded her career high with 20 points, 16 of them coming in the second half. Stephanie Stokes (Watertown, NY) finished the evening with 23 points for the Wildcats. Senior guard Lizette Blaakman (Naples, NY) totaled 11 points for SUNY IT in ten minutes of play.

At halftime the Hawks held a one-point lead thanks to a last second lay-up from junior forward Kristin Jackson (East Islip, NY), 24-23. Junior guard Jenny Driscoll (Staten Island, NY) provided seven points to help SUNY New Paltz (5-5, 1-2) grab the halftime edge. Freshman guard Jasmine Scheffel (Oakland, MD) was busy under the basket collecting five rebounds in the opening period, three offensively. SUNY IT (3-5, 1-2) battled the Hawks throughout the first half, which feature eight lead changes. The Wildcats were led by junior forward Stokes, who dropped 14 points on the Hawks in opening half and senior forward Laura Giacone (Baldwinsville, NY) who finished the evening with 10 points and seven rebounds in the loss.

The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team will travel to play conference rival Buffalo State at 6:00 pm on Friday, January 13.
