SUNY New Paltz Swim Teams Swept At Geneseo

GENESEO, NY — The SUNY New Paltz swim teams dropped this afternoon’s duel meet to conference rival Geneseo. The men’s team lost 101-87, while women’s team suffered their first duel meet defeat since February of 2003, 112-93.

Sophomore Liz Ruggiero (Congers, NY), junior Katie Rapp (Liverpool, NY) and senior Joanna Masterson (Canandaigua, NY) swam brilliantly, each completing the afternoon with several first place finishes. Ruggiero swam to a new pool and varsity record with a time of 2:13.92 in the 200-yard butterfly. Earlier in the meet, Ruggiero teamed with Rapp, sophomore Laura Lipp (St. James, NY) and Masterson for a first place swim in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 4:12.71. Masterson also grabbed first place finishes in the 50-yard (25.41) and the 100-yard (54.85) freestyle. Rapp claimed a first place for the SUNY New Paltz women’s swimming team (4-1) in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:18.44 and freshman Joelle Hopf (Vestal, NY) did the same in the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:32.44.

The SUNY New Paltz men’s swimming team (2-3) earned first place finishes in the 500-yard freestyle and the 200-yard breaststroke. Freshman Chad Santa Maria (Rexford, NY) was the men’s top finisher in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:08.04. Junior Danny Lo (Toms River, NJ) swam a 2:21.37 in the 200-yard breaststroke to lead his teammates, sophomores John Fleckenstein (Port Jefferson, NY) and Nick Johnson (Highland Mills, NY), who placed in second place (2:24.01) and third place (2:26.45), respectively.

The SUNY New Paltz men’s swimming team will compete next at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Invitational on Saturday, January 14, at 12:00 pm. The women’s swimming team will compete next, with the men, on Wednesday, January 18, when the SUNY New Paltz swim teams host Stevens Tech. at 3:00 pm.
