NEW PALTZ — For the sixth year, the State University of New York at New Paltz will host 37 middle schools at the 2003 New York State Science Olympiad from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 12.
The students participating in the exciting event have already won competitions on a regional level and are now competing on a state level of inter-school competition in 25 areas of scientific and technological skills. Winners will then go on to a national competition.
The Science Olympiad is an international nonprofit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education by both students and teachers. The Olympiad, originated in Delaware in 1984 and started in New York in 1985, has grown to include all 50 states, totaling more than 14,000 actively-participating K-12 schools.
The Science Olympiad tournaments are rigorous academic interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of individual and team events. The competitions follow the format of popular board games, TV shows and athletic games. Events have been designed to recognize the wide variety of skills that students possess and emphasize advanced learning in science through active, hands-on, group participation — intended to remind students that science can be fun and challenging.
This tournament is organized by the New York State Science Olympiad, and is supported by the SUNY New Paltz Center for Continuing & Professional Education, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and the School of Science and Engineering.
