NEW PALTZ — As a remembrance of the events that took place on Sept. 11, 2001, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at SUNY New Paltz is sponsoring a panel discussion to reflect on the impact and effects of the terrorist attacks.
The event will take place from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Sept. 11 in Lecture Center 102 and is open to the public. Four social scientists on the New Paltz faculty will comment on the impact and effect of these events, their aftermath and their future implications. They will talk about how this has affected our government decisions and social interactions.
“At their core, colleges and universities are about learning, exploration and reflection. The anniversary of this horrible and searing event provides a wonderful opportunity for this institution to be true to that purpose,” said Interim President Steven Poskanzer.
The moderator will be Dean, Gerald Benjamin (College of Liberal Arts & Sciences) and the panelists will be Janice Anderson (Communication and Media), Lew Brownstein (Political Science), Glenn Geher (Psychology), and Brian Obach (Sociology). Each panelist will speak for about ten minutes. They will then take questions and comments from the audience.
In addition to the panel, New Paltz has been advised by the Chancellor to recognize four moments of silence. The suggested moments of silence will be at 8:46 a.m., the time the first plane struck the World Trade Center, at 9:03 a.m., the moment of the second impact, 9:59 a.m., when the first tower collapsed, and finally at 10:29 a.m., when the second tower fell. All SUNY colleges and universities will toll their bells at 10:29 a.m., the time the second World Trade Center tower collapsed.
