Women’s Lacrosse Edged By Clarkson

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — In their opening game of the season, played in St. Petersburg, FL, the women’s lacrosse team fell to the Clarkson Golden Knights 9-8.

The Hawks fell behind early to the Knights and were forced to play catch-up for a majority of the match. New Paltz was able to gain a 4-4 tie on a goal from Katie Sharp (Mineola, NY) but could not grab the lead. The Hawks found themselves down 9-6 with less than four minutes to go but made a furious comeback drawing within one with 1:19 left. New Paltz was unable to find the tying goal though as Clarkson goalkeeper Allison Morlock kept the ball out in the Hawks’ final charge.

Freshman Alyson Campbell (New Hyde Park, NY) had a hat trick in her first collegiate game to lead the Hawks. Sharp added two goals and an assist and junior Jackie Bunzel (Massapequa, NY) also scored twice. Freshman Mary Warren (Mineola, NY) had the remaining goal for New Paltz and goalkeeper Adrian Grasso (Oceanside, NY) made 18 saves in the game.

The women’s team will next play at Elmira on Wednesday beginning at 4:00.
