NEW PALTZ — John Baugher, assistant professor of sociology at the State University of New York at New Paltz, will present a lecture titled “Individualization, Political Generations and Union Loyalty,” Monday, March 25 at 5 p.m. in the campus’ Honors Center, located in College Hall.
“Unions in many Western industrialized societies have witnessed declining membership rolls in recent decades,” said Baugher. “A common assertion is that deunionization reflects the changing desires of younger generations of workers, who under the sway of a culture of individualism, are thought to question the basic legitimacy of unions.”
Baugher’s talk will address whether today’s workers see value in unions. He says today’s workers expect different things from unions than past generations, and if unions change to meet these new needs, they will be valued and legitimate.
“The Faculty Lecture Series is designed to bring together SUNY New Paltz faculty members to discuss their current research before the campus community and the wider public,” said Jeff Miller, director of the Honors Program and assistant political science professor.
The series also allows students to experience a more professional discourse than is generally seen in the classroom.
There are two remaining lectures in this semester’s series. The next lecture is scheduled for April 8. Dan Freedman, assistant professor from the Chemistry Department at SUNY New Paltz, will give a lecture titled “Green Chemistry.”
