Softball Drops Doubleheader to Union

NEW PALTZ — Tricia Cascio drove in three runs and Kelly McFarlane scored twice, but it wasn’t enough as the Hawks dropped the first game of a twin bill to Union College 8-10 in extra innings Wednesday afternoon at Deane Field.

Cascio tied the game on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at eight. However, Union scored two in the top of the eighth on hits by Audrey Brennan and Shanna O’Brien. Jen Varrone went the distance on the mound for the Hawks.

In the nightcap, Sarah Johnston pitched a one hitter in an 0-8 Union victory that was called after five innings due to the mercy rule. Bridget Leach had the lone hit for New Paltz in the second inning. Kristin Ackermann went the distance for the Hawks who fall to 0-15 overall. New Paltz travels to Fredonia on Friday and Buffalo State on Saturday.
