The SUNY New Paltz Writing Board will present its fifth annual “Celebration of Writing Day” on Tuesday, May 1, to recognize student writing. The event is from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Honors Center in College Hall.
The event, free and open to all, is designed as an opportunity for SUNY New Paltz students to show their talents and be proud of their exemplary writing abilities and techniques. Critical writing is the encouraged theme for this year’s event. Entries are expected to include essays, short stories, drama, poetry, expository writing and fiction.
“The Celebration of Writing Day offers students, faculty, and friends an opportunity to hear what sort of very cool things the student community is writing these days; to interact with each other in a friendly, intellectually stimulating way; and to eat — all at the same time,” said Jim Dembowski, a member of the University Writing Board.
Each participant will receive a “Celebration of Writing Day” certificate, and cash prizes will be awarded for outstanding submissions. Participants will read excerpts from their writings and refreshments will be served. In addition, participants are eligible for a chance to have their work published on myhiddentalent.com, a student-run Web site that publishes student writing.
SUNY New Paltz students interested in submitting their writing, applications are available in campus academic department offices. All entries should be submitted in writing and on disk, with a completed application form by April 20, to the Communication and Media Office in Coykendall Science Building, Room 51.
