NEW PALTZ — 
On Tuesday, January 30, 2001 Joel Evans (oboe), Valentina Charlap-Evans (viola), and Ruthanne Schempf (piano), all faculty of the Music Department at SUNY New Paltz, present a program featuring music from the Romantic Era. “Gothic Romance” includes works by the Early Romantic Robert Schumann, and Late Romantics Josef Holbrooke and Hugo Kander. The concert begins at 8:00 PM in McKenna Theatre and tickets are $6.00.
At the turn of the nineteenth century, the Viennese Classical style of composition, typified by such composers as Beethoven and Mozart, enjoyed immense popularity. Yet a new style of classical music was developing simultaneously. Loosening the formal restrictions of prior classical composers, composers of the Romantic Era placed their emphasis on expressive content with a predilection for pure melody and daring harmonies.
Often inspired by non-musical sources such as literary works, the compositions of the Romantic Era followed distinctly non-musical plans. The symphonic poem and the art song are examples of this romantic style. Art songs, opera, and even the symphony itself all came into their own during this extraordinary period in music history.
Tickets to “Gothic Romance” are $6 general admission, $5 SUNY staff and senior citizens, and $3 students. They are available at the door to McKenna Theatre beginning at 7:00 PM on January 30.
