Bishop Earns Two Honors

NEW PALTZ — SUNY New Paltz freshman guard Britni Bishop’s continued strong play has earned her two awards this week.

First, Bishop was selected as the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. Then she was honored again, with her selection as the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Upstate New York Women’s Basketball Player of the Week.

In three games last week, Bishop averaged 19.0 points, 3.7 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 1.7 steals, while shooting 57 percent (20-for-35) from the field and 55 percent (11-for-20) from three-point range, as New Paltz went 2-1. Twice she scored a career-high 23 points – first in Tuesday’s 65-55 home win over Oswego, and again in Saturday’s 82-65 loss to nationally ranked Cortland.

Bishop is currently ranked eighth in Division III in three-point field goal percentage. This week, she is tied with Oneonta’s Kristin Lemon for the SUNYAC lead in assists (4.7), and is ranked third in three-point percentage (46.9), fourth in scoring (14.0) and 12th in field goal percentage (50.4).

It was just one week ago that the Staten Island product was the Daily Freeman Athlete of the Week, primarily for her 20-point, five-assist effort that helped power the Hawks past Potsdam, 57-44, on Jan. 6.

Bishop, a 2000 St. Peters High graduate, has stepped in admirably for recent New Paltz graduate, and the Hawks’ all-time leading scorer, Robin Shields, a fellow Staten Island native. Bishop, a sociology major, wants to be a New York City police officer following graduation.
