Soccer Hawks Edged By Lasell

NORTH ADAMS, MASS. — SUNY New Paltz outshot Lasell, 13-10, on Sunday, but made several key mistakes, en route to a 4-2 men’s soccer loss at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts Fall Classic.

First, Matt Hutchinson tapped home a ball left loose in front in anticipation of an official’s call that wasn’t made. Then later, Anthony Scarsella converted a penalty kick after being tackled in the box by a New Paltz defender.

The rest of the time, New Paltz (0-5) showed signs of finally breaking its winless streak.

Mario Lavacca scored with 13:20 left in the first half to cut the (1-1) Lasers’ halftime advantage to 2-1, and Stephen Ferrara scored on a penalty kick with 1:42 left in regulation to narrow the final scoring gap. Reserve goalkeeper Elmer Velasquez made three saves to help keep New Paltz close.

The Hawks open SUNYAC play with home matches this weekend against 1999 SUNYAC Champion Plattsburgh (Friday at 4 p.m.) and Potsdam (Saturday at 1 p.m.).
