Hawks Rally Falls Short at Fredonia
FREDONIA, NY — In a game that was played in a steady rainfall, the SUNY New Paltz women’s soccer team tried to rally from a three-goal deficit, but came up short in a 4-2 loss to conference rival Fredonia this afternoon.
Trailing 3-0 in the 62nd minute, the Hawks got on the board when sophomore midfielder Alison Fliegel (New Hyde Park, NY) put a pass from freshman midfielder Lauren Martel (W. Sayville, NY) into the net to trim the Blue Devils lead to two.
SUNY New Paltz (2-4-1, 0-1-0) kept the pressure on the Blue Devils and eight minutes later sophomore forward Kerri Kelty (Valley Stream, NY) beat Fredonia goalie Brianna Falvey to pull the Hawks within a goal.
Freshman forward Linsay Kulas, who scored two goals in the game, gave Fredonia some breathing room in the 77th minute when she slipped one past SUNY New Paltz senior goalie Maggie Fenton (East Meadow, NY) to extend the Blue Devils lead to 4-2.
Fredonia (5-2-1, 1-0-0) came out strong and took a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute on Kulas’ first goal of the day. The Blue Devils maintained possession for much of the first 45 minutes and put 15 shots at Fenton for the game. Senior midfielder Katie Remus, who assisted on two goals, also found the net when she finished off a corner kick in the 32nd minute to give the Blue Devils a 2-0 advantage. Remus then set up a goal by junior forward Jessica Weiser in the 58th minute to put Fredonia in front 3-0.
The game was the SUNYAC opener for both teams. The Hawks will face Buffalo State on the road tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
