Donors and students come together at Scholarship Reception
SUNY New Paltz scholarship recipients met with donors, alumni and Foundation Board members at the 2018 Scholarship and Tower Society Reception this spring, celebrating the College community’s strong philanthropic investment in the future successes of students.
“The potential among our students is tremendous,” said President Donald P. Christian. “The impact of philanthropic support on the lives of students cannot be overstated.”
During the 2017-18 academic year, the SUNY New Paltz Foundation provided support for 298 awards totaling nearly $543,000.
This year’s reception was held in April and remarks were given by Gail Gallerie, one of the first supporters in the Foundation’s history; Matthew Healy, a friend of SUNY New Paltz, a member of the Tower Society and the founding donor of the Sposato Sisters Scholarship; and student speaker Darkwah “Sam” Boahen ’18 (Computer Engineering).
A model scholar and accomplished student leader, Boahen has held many roles on campus, including time as a student mentor for the Scholars Mentorship program and Senior Residential Advisor in Capen Hall. He has also served as a student representative on New Paltz hiring search committees, an orientation program assistant, summer orientation leader, and accepted student bus trip facilitator. He has also been active in the New Day Ensemble, African Student Union, and Student Concerns Committee.
Boahen was a recipient of the Dr. Margaret Wade-Lewis Scholarship, named in memory of one of the founders of New Paltz’s Black Studies Department and in honor of her dedication to helping academically talented students.
“I have grown so much through my experiences here,” said Boahen. “This generosity has inspired me to continue toward my dream, and I strive to one day help others as I have been helped.”
Many New Paltz alumni offer gifts to students through the Foundation. Their contributions include both monetary gifts and the gift of sharing their time to attend events and engage with the College. Both types of philanthropy play an influential role in helping students thrive.
