Minimum wage and tax and I-9 form requirements: Student Employment updates for 2023-24

The Payroll Office advised the campus community of the new minimum wage for student employment and a new process for accepting student employees’ tax forms and other authorization documents.

Minimum Wage Increased to $15 for student employees effective fall 2023

In accordance with New York State Department of Labor policies on minimum wage, all student employees at SUNY New Paltz shall receive a minimum wage of $15 per hour in the 2023-24 academic year.

More information about the New York minimum wage is available here.

Student employees must submit tax forms to Payroll staff in person

The Payroll Office will no longer accept tax forms, I-9 forms or other employment authorization documents via email.

All such documents should be submitted in person at Haggerty Administration Building (HAB) room 301 so they can be verified by a member of the Payroll team.

Only original copies of the documents will be accepted.

If an employee refuses to meet for a physical document inspection, then DHS’s position is that an employer may not continue to retain the employee as they have not fulfilled their Form I-9 documentary requirements, which includes presenting the documentation for in-person physical inspection, as required by federal law.
