Juneteenth 2023: New York events for celebration and reflection

In 2021, the New York State Legislature approved June 19 (Juneteenth) as a state holiday. Offices at SUNY New Paltz will be closed on Monday, June 19, 2023, in observance.

SUNY New Paltz students, faculty, staff and alumni who would like to take part in Juneteenth celebrations this year may be interested in the following ceremonies and celebrations happening locally and in New York City: 

June 16: Ulster County Juneteenth Freedom Celebration and Movie Screening 4-8 p.m.
Celebration at T.R. Gallo Waterfront Park in Kingston starting at 4 p.m., with a drum processional and history presentations on the significance of Juneteenth, followed by a 6 p.m film screening of documentary “Lost Rondout: A Story of Urban Removal” and panel discussion at in the Ulster County Restorative Justice Center.   

June 16-18: Juneteenth NYC Presents: 14th Annual Kaleidoscope of Black Culture. Various dates and times.
Virtual and in-person events throughout the weekend before Juneteenth will be taking place in Brooklyn, New York, from festivals to concerts. Click this link for tickets to all events. 

June 17: Harambee’s Sixth Annual Juneteenth Celebration 12 –7 p.m.
A block party at Harambee, home of the Pine Street African Burial Ground in Kingston, featuring live jazz music, a ceremony honoring those whose remains lie in the Burial Ground, and more.    

June 18 & 19: Third Annual New Paltz Juneteenth Jubilee 9:45 a.m.-8 p.m.
Hosted by New Paltz’s Margaret Wade-Lewis Center for Black History and Culture, this two-day extravaganza is marked by ceremonies, tours and a Historic Huguenot Street exhibition honoring the legacies of enslaved Africans integral to the Village of New Paltz’s history, with musical performances on Monday evening.
