It is with sadness that we share with our community that Professor Emeritus Glenn C. Doty, who was the founding editor of the Legislative Gazette in Albany and the heart and soul of the publication for many years, died on Aug. 7, 2021, at the age of 86.

A retired journalism professor and former reporter, Doty dedicated his career to teaching ever-changing groups of interns the basics of journalism, how to cover state government, and “was a tough, fair and beloved presence in the Gazette newsroom.”

“Glenn was an old-school journalist who believed in independence, journalistic integrity, balance and — most of all — getting the facts right,” said Professor Emeritus of Journalism Robert Miraldi. “He was beloved by so many students as he turned their prose into important fact-based stories for state policymakers.”

Doty earned a master’s degree in English from New York University and began his newspaper career with the Middletown Times Herald-Record, rising to sports editor before he joined the sports staff at the Binghamton Sun Bulletin. In 1961, he returned to the Times Herald-Record as sports editor and later the managing editor from 1968 to 1977.

In 1978, Doty began a new career at the College as a professor of journalism and helped launch The Legislative Gazette, a weekly newspaper in Albany, New York, for and about state government. The Gazette transitioned from traditional weekly newsprint to a robust digital presence in 2015.

During his time at the College, Doty also began a weekly political column at the Wallkill Valley and Mid-Hudson Times newspapers, and he continued to write for several years after leaving Albany.

Doty was as also a proprietor of the antique store Guns & Collectibles in Montgomery, New York, which he enjoyed with his wife Barbara for more than 20 years.

Doty was born in Warwick, New York, and was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Barbara D. Doty, his brother Stephen R. Doty, his sister Margaret R. Romano and her husband Tom Romano.

He is survived by his son Paul and his wife Elizabeth, son Mark and his wife Janice, and son Brian and his wife Karen. He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Joseph, Rebecca, Paul, Sarah, Megan, Daniel, Patrick and wife Laura, Lacey and husband Jason, Stephanie and husband Jean as well as 12 great-grandchildren.
