The New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA), Mid-Hudson Chapter has announced its Outstanding Students of Accounting awards for 2020, and two SUNY New Paltz students in the School of Business are among this year’s honorees.

SUNY New Paltz’s two recipients are Brian Dyroff ’20 (Accounting) (undergraduate accounting program) and Ian Handschuh ’20g (Public Accountancy).

They received their awards in an online ceremony attended by leaders and faculty members at seven regional universities, including New Paltz’s own School of Business Dean Kristin Backhaus, Lecturer Rief Kanan, Assistant Professor Ji Yu and Adjunct Daniel Boice. Kanan is the Chairman of the Relations with Colleges and Universities Committee at NYSSCPA and organized the ceremony.

“Both recipients have demonstrated academic and personal attributes that the faculty feel will lead to success in the accounting profession,” said Assistant Professor Yu.

Dyroff is currently a student assistant and provides tutoring in various accounting classes to peer students. In addition, he has served as a coordinator for the VITA program, which provides free income tax assistance to members of our community, and as a tutor/mentor for high school students preparing for the math components of the SAT and ACT.

Ian Handschuh

Handschuh has earned placement on the Dean’s List during each semester of his career in the College’s MBA Accounting program. He has also volunteered in the VITA program at the college and is a Phi Theta Kappa member.
