Saturday Arts Lab returns with innovative teaching for young creators

Registration is open for the fall 2019 session of Saturday Arts Lab, an annual series of visual arts workshops and classes for young doodlers, creators and makers in kindergarten through eighth grade, hosted by the School of Fine & Performing Arts at SUNY New Paltz.

The Saturday Arts Lab offers a broad curriculum in the visual arts, with courses carefully tailored to learners at specific ages and experience levels. Hands-on courses are taught by advanced students in arts education, with faculty supervision, and are designed to stimulate creative problem finding/solving and critical thinking in a supportive and inclusive learning environment.

Saturday Arts Lab classes begin on Sept. 21, 2019, and will take place on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon for morning classes and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. for afternoon classes through the end of November. The program fee is $75 for the nine-week session, which includes eight inquiry days and one exhibition day. A limited number of need-based scholarships are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Fall 2019 class dates are: Sept. 21 and 28; Oct. 5, 19, and 26; Nov. 2, 9 and 16; and Nov. 23, the culminating exhibition day for students to present their work.

The following Saturday Arts Lab courses will be offered for fall 2019:

Playful Engagements in Art (Kindergarten)
For our youngest artists who love to explore and learn through play, this art class focuses on multimedia exploration of emergent processes in art making such as drawing, painting, collage, printmaking and 3-dimensional sculpture. The youngest artists experiment with media and will discover together in this energetic and play-based approach to art making.

Art Investigations: Imagination and Materials (Grades 1 and 2)
In this class, children who enjoy investigating their fascinations and imaginations will use hands-on art processes as part of a learning community to explore ideas and environments with a variety of media. This class offers a combination of play-based investigations and thematic media exploration in art making.

Draw it, Paint it, Build it: Multimedia Making (Grades 3 and 4)
This class emphasizes thematic inquiry through drawing, painting media, collage and assemblage with found objects. Children experience ways of building up surfaces from mark making, to relief and free standing sculpture, build on technical abilities and creative problem solving skills through experimentation, discovery, and self-expression.

Storytelling: Connecting To Your Story (Grades 5 and 6)
For grades 5-6, this course focuses on studio experiences that stimulate and develop young artists’ creative imagination, expression and skills. Today’s storytellers can take advantage of new technologies to transform their ideas into an interactive experience.

Community and Culture: Designing & Refining Ideas (Grades 7 and 8)
For grades 7-8, this course combines studio experiences and creative solutions that refine young artists’ ideas and technical abilities. These emergent artists can deeply explore arts media and technique to communicate their ideas concerning community and culture.
