Defensive Strong in Win over Brockport in Women’s Basketball

BROCKPORT, NY- The New Paltz women’s basketball team traveled to the College at Brockport today to finish up weekend play. The Hawks walked away with a dominating performance and improved to 7-3 overall and 4-0 in the SUNYAC with a 65-47 victory. The Hawks return to the court Friday, January 15 against Buffalo State at 6 p.m. in the Hawks Center.

Freshman Maliqua Fisher led the Hawks with a game-high 15 points and six rebounds. Senior Maggie Farrell added 14 points and sophomore Caitlin Irwin chipped in with seven points and eight rebounds. Senior Nicole Sarcone had a solid game with six points, six rebounds and four assists.

Rachel Csakany led the Golden Eagles with a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds and Whitney Smith added nine points and three rebounds. Sarah Alwardt finished with a game-high 12 rebounds and two points. Brockport falls to 2-7 overall and 1-4 in the SUNYAC.

The Golden Eagles came out in the second half scoring the first four points to tie the game at 25-25. The Hawks would go on a 14-4 run to take a 40-29 lead. After the Golden Eagles cut the lead to seven with 12:49 remaining, the Hawks defensive would not allow Brockport to get any closer.aThe Hawks would close out the game on a 25-14 run to pull away for the victory.

In the first half, the Hawks fell behind at 5-4 and was held without a field goal over a 5:40 span. The Golden Eagles were not able to capitalize due the Hawks forcing 15 turnovers in the half. The Hawks would regain the lead with a 9-5 run to close out the half and take a 25-21 lead into the break.

Maggie Farrell and Kristen Caban each netted five points and two rebounds a piece in the half. Maliqua Fisher chipped in with four points and two rebounds.

Brockport was led by Erica Johnson, Lacey Grove and Jenna Smith with five points a piece. Sarah Alwardt led with eight rebounds for the Golden Eagles in the first half.
