2009 Women’s Tennis Recap

NEW PALTZ, NY-The SUNY New Paltz women’s tennis team had another successful season this fall, coming in second place at SUNYACs and finishing the season with an impressive 9-2 overall and 6-1 in the SUNYAC.

After coming back into the season without last year’s number one player, the team proved to still be strong, with some new additions to the team. Lindsey Garyn (Melville/Half Hollow Hills East) joined the roster as a junior transfer from University of Tampa. Kayla DiPaulo (Liverpool/Liverpool), Alexandria Esposito (Bellmore/JFK) and Montana Wilson (Hopewell Junction/John Jay) entered as top contributing freshman.

This season, the team had only one conference loss, to the eventual SUNYAC Champions, Geneseo. One of the season highlights was on senior day when the Hawks faced NYU’s tough roster. After an intense battle, New Paltz was victorious, with a score of 5-4. This was the first time New Paltz defeated NYU in the program’s history, making it a special match for both the team and the honored co-captain seniors, Kerri Serkes (Massapequa/Massapequa) and Lyndsey Lovinger (Miller Place/Miller Place).

This fall, the New Paltz tennis team had a very strong roster. Leading the lineup was junior, Stephanie Schara (Huntington/Kellenberg Memorial), who finished 9-7 overall and 5-2 in the SUNYAC in first singles. Schara teamed with Garyn in first doubles to earn a record of 11-4 overall and 7-0 in the SUNYAC. Garyn had a great performance at third singles with a record of 14-3 overall and 6-1 in the SUNYAC, earning herself the second seed in the SUNYAC draw, where she was runner-up in the third singles flight.

Wilson had an impressive showing this season, earning a 13-4 record overall and 6-1 in the SUNYAC at second singles winning title in her flight at SUNYACs. Wilson and DiPaulo teamed up in second doubles and finished with a 13-4 overall record and 6-1 in the SUNYAC. The pair also were runners up at SUNYACs for their flight. DiPaulo had a great season at fourth singles with a 6-3 record overall for the season and 3-0 in the SUNYAC after filling in for Lovinger, who posted a 5-2 overall record and 3-1 in the SUNYAC at the position.

Sophomore Ingrid Maryansky (Forest Hills/Forest Hills) set a school record by winning her first 13 matches of the year en route to a 14-2 overall record and 7-0 in the SUNYAC.

Esposito rounded out the lineup at sixth singles, where she went 12-5 overall and 5-2 in the SUNYAC for the season and was the runner-up in her flight at SUNYACs. Rounding out the doubles lineup were Serkes and Lovinger who posted a 7-8 record overall and 3-4 in the SUNYAC at third doubles for the fall.

The Hawks will begin the spring season when they head to Puerto Rico for a week in March. The Hawks will be competing against local teams and teams from the around the United States. The first home match will be April 7th, 2010 against Stevens at 3:30 p.m.
