Oswego Defeats Hawks in Women’s Soccer

NEW PALTZ, NY- The SUNY New Paltz women’s soccer team fell to the visiting Lakers from Oswego State Friday evening 3-1 on Alumni Field.

Just two minutes into the game Maggie Vasconi scored her first goal of the season off a pass from Vanessa Rogers for the early 1-0 advantage.

In the 14th minute, Oswego had a chance to tie the contest. A cross by Laura Ambron found Tricia Sullivan wide open at the corner of the six-yard box, but her shot sailed left of the post. The Lakers would tie the game at 1-1 in the 21st minute when Michelle Bateman cross set-up Sullivan for the one-timer goal.

New Paltz had the next two scoring chances in the final 11 minutes. The first came when Brittany Bennett’s corner found Sam Abravanel at the left six-yard box and her shot was blocked by the defender on the left post. With three minutes remaining in the half, Alexa Balestrieri throw in was deflected to Abravanel whose shot sailed across the box missing the right corner.

Julie McCloskey gave the Lakers a 2-1 lead in the 54th minute when the Hawks keeper miss played a ball in the air and McCloskey found the back of the net.

Michelle Bateman gave the Lakers the insurance goal in the 72nd minute when the ball was cleared from the defensive zone and Bateman raced down the field beating the defender. She came down the right side one-on-one with the keeper and bounced her shot over the diving hands of Danielle Gura.

Holly Lyndaker recorded the win in net. The Lakers improve to 7-8-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the SUNYAC.
