New Paltz runs over Wells, Bergmann scores twice

NEW PALTZ- The SUNY New Paltz field hockey team defeated the Express from Wells College, by a score of 3-0, on Friday evening on the Turf Field.

In the 11th minute, Wells had a great opportunity to score when they were on a fast break. However, Elizabeth Tong (Woodstock/Onteora Central) made a breathtaking kick save, keeping the score 0-0.

Minutes later, Ann Marie Rudd (Garden City Park/New Hyde Park Memorial) stepped up big and made a defensive safe.

In the 24th minute, Tong made another impact play when Wells was on a breakaway, and she stepped out of the cage kicking the ball out of play and away from the Express attack.

Minutes later, Kristen Bergmann (Massapequa) found the back of the cage off of Alyssa Finck’s (Hudson/Ichabod Crane) pass.

The rain and cold became a factor in the second half, but the Hawks were able to overcome the weather and stayed on course.

In the 39th minute, Bergmann added her second goal of the game and 12th of the season. Sarah Schloss (Brant Lake/North Warren) was able to find Bergmann in the congested Wells defense.

In the 66th minute, Stacey Miller (Lindenhurst) put a goal up on the board for the Hawks, making it a final score of 3-0.

Wells’s starting goalkeeper Martha Nowlan recorded the loss in net, allowing two goals and saving five shots. Amanda Catalano finished the game in net for the Express, allowing one goal and made one save in six minutes of play.

Tong earned the win in net for the Hawks, earning her second shutout of the season, saving three shots.
