Schloss Late Goal Seals Win For Hawks

NEW PALTZ, NY- The SUNY New Paltz field hockey team defeated the Valiants from Manhattanville 2-1, on Saturday afternoon on the Turf Field. 

At 32:48, in the first half, Alyssa Finck (Hudson/Ichabod Crane) received the corner pass from Kristen Bergmann (Massapequa) and Finck’s shot was saved by the goalkeeper.  The Hawks struck first when Bergmann’s shot beat the goalkeeper at 8:44, for her second goal of the season. 

Early into the second half Manhattanville came out strong and tied the game at 1-1.  At 49:26 Manhattanville’s Jen Ascencio scored on a breakaway goal.  Both teams continued to battle as they were tied up until the last four minutes.  Finck passed to Sarah Schloss (Brant Lake/North Warren) who scored her second goal of the season off a clear from Finck.

Manhattanville’s goalkeeper Melissa Barry recorded the loss in the net for the Valiants.  She allowed two goals on eight shots and saving five.  Manhattanville falls to 1-1 overall, 0-0 in the MAC.

Goalkeeper Elizabeth Tong (Woodstock/Onteora) recorded the win in net for New Paltz.  Tong allowed one goal on seven shots and saved two. 

The Hawks improve to 1-1 overall, 0-0 in the SUNYAC.  Head coach Shanna Vitale earns her first collegiate victory at New Paltz. 

The Hawks return to the field Wednesday, September 9th at Western Connecticut.  Game time is set for 6 p.m.
