Late Lead Slips from Hawks

HOBOKEN, NJ- The SUNY New Paltz men’s soccer team tied Rhode Island College 1-1, Saturday evening in the Stevens Tournament held at the De Baun Athletic Complex. 

The game was scoreless until the 72nd minute when junior transfer David Gardiner (Malta/Ballston Spa) put the Hawks ahead by one when he controlled the ball at the top of the box and made a move to beat the defender for the goal.

Rhode Island would tie the score with 1:36 left in the game when Jonathan Goncalves received a cross from Kory Pacheco for the equalizer goal.  Rhode Island outshot the Hawks 18-8 and held an 11-4 advantage in corners.

Andrew Hogan allowed one goal and saved two shots.  Rhode Island College improves to 0-1-1 overall.

Peter Carmel (Ronkonkoma/The Stony Brock School) allowed one goal and made seven saves to help New Paltz improve to 1-0-1 overall.  The Hawks return to the field tomorrow against Hunter to wrap up the Stevens Tournament.  Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
