Softball Extends Win Streak to Six

The SUNY New Paltz softball team hosted Sage College Wednesday afternoon and swept the Gators 12-4 and 8-0. The Hawks improve to 19-17 on the season.

Junior Melyssa Cilmi (Huntington Station/Walt Whitman) finished 2-3 with three RBI and Elizabeth May (Commack) went 2-4 with three RBI in game one as the Hawks totaled 11 hits. Justine Scutaro (Shoreham/Shoreham Wading River) and Rose Dovi (Cortland) each finished 2-3 and Dovi scored three runs. First year Devon Kelly (Baldwin) earned the win as she allowed four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts.

New Paltz took an early 5-0 lead in the first inning on five hits and one error. With runners on second and third, Scutaro hit an RBI single to advance runners before Sam Barra (Islip) hit an RBI double. Dovi followed with her third triple of the season and Erin Fitzpatrick (Delmar/Bethlehem) singled to drive in the final run of the inning. Sage cut the lead to 5-2 as the tallied a single run in the second and third inning before New Paltz added three runs on two hits in the third and fourth inning for the 11-2 lead. Sage scored two runs in the fifth to force New Paltz to hit in the bottom of the inning for the eight run rule. With bases load May hit a double to complete the scoring and end the game.

Barra and Victoria Holm (Floral Park) led the offense in game two as they each registered two hits. Sophomore Courtney Costello (Bayport/Bayport Blue Point) threw a no-hitter and retired six batters in four innings of work for the win.

With two outs and bases loaded in the second inning, Elizabeth Tong (Woodstock/Onteora) walked to advance runners and Cilmi reached on an error by the shortshop to bring in the second run. New Paltz totaled four runs on four hits in the third inning including a two-run RBI single by Cassie Barcavage (Cold Springs/Haldane). The Hawks added a single run in the fourth on a single by Barra and finished the scoring in the fifth as Holm hit her third double of the season.

The Hawks close out their season on Thursday April 23 when they host Union at 3:30pm.
