Three Hawks score in double-figures still not enough against Baruch

NEW YORK, NY- The SUNY New Paltz women’s basketball team fell to host Baruch College Monday night 78-63 in the ARC Arena.  The Hawks for the fifteenth time in nineteen games won the turnover battle forcing 27 turnovers in the game and 11 by the nations top assist leader, Monique Salmon. 

With 12:17 remaining in the first half, the Hawks trailed 15-10 before the Bearcats went on a 10-2 run over the next three minutes to push the lead to 25-12 with 9:11 remaining.  The Hawks responded with a 15-6 run of their own to cut the lead to 31-27 with 3:26 remaining only to see the Bearcats go on a 12-3 run to close out the half leading 43-30.

In the second half, the Hawks could not find their rhythm, as the Bearcats push their half-time lead to 62-41 with 10:30 remaining in the game, before the Hawks stormed back with a 19-9 run to cut the lead to 71-60 with 2:36 remaining.  The Bearcats quickly shut down the Hawks attack and held off the Hawks for the win.

Sophomore forward Artie Williams (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) led the Hawks with 14 points and seven rebounds and moves into 13th all-time on the school’s career scoring list.  Freshman guard Caitlin Irwin (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) scored 13 points and had three rebounds and junior guard Maggie Farrell (Hillsdale, NY/Immaculate) chipped in with 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists. 

Junior guard Nicole Sarcone (Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy) tallied four points, five rebounds, six assists, two blocks and two steals.  Sarcone moves into third all-time in school history in assists and needs only three assists to move into second.  With her two steals, Sarcone moves into seventh all-time in steals.  Junior forward Carly Minehan (Albany, NY/Albany) added six points three rebounds and one block, which moves her into 12th place all-time for blocks in a season.

The Bearcats were led by Kalea Davis with a game high 18 points and 11 rebounds and Christina Kelly chipped in with 17 points and a game high 12 rebounds.  Monique Salmon added 12 points, seven rebounds and a game high seven assists.  Baruch improves to 18-5 overall and 11-0 in the CUNYAC.

The Hawks fall to 13-6 overall and 9-2 in the SUNYAC.  The Hawks closed out their non-conference schedule tonight and have five games remaining, which starts with a three game road trip starting in Oswego this Friday night starting at 6 p.m.
