Stross Named NECVA and Metro Rookie of the Week
Freshman middle hitter Kevin Stross (Port Washington/Schreiber) was recently named the North Eastern Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) and Metro-Division Rookie of the Week as he guided the Hawks to a 3-1 week.
Stross earned the award as he tallied 52 kills on 88 attempts with only 11 errors to produce a .466 hitting percentage in 13 sets played. He landed eight service aces, totaled seven blocks and lofted eight digs to help New Paltz improve to 7-4 overall and 3-0 in NECVA-metro division play.
In the Hawks first match of the week, Stross hit .448 after putting away 18 kills in 29 attempts with five errors in a sweep of Bard College. He followed up that performance by being named to the Gothic Knight All-Tournament team as he hit .475 in ten games with 34 kills (34-6-59), eight service aces and five blocks. He averaged 3.40 kills, 0.80 aces and 0.50 blocks per set.
This is the second time New Paltz has had an athlete earn NECVA and metro-division Rookie of the Week honors. The last Hawk to receive the recognition was Chris Holden on February 2, 2007.
