Softball Swept by Oneonta 9-0, 2-1

NEW PALTZ, NY — The softball team hosted Oneonta in a SUNYAC doubleheader this afternoon and fell to the Red Dragons 9-0, 2-1.
In game one, the Red Dragons took a 1-0 lead after the first and continued to build their lead with three runs in the second and third inning. The Red Dragons completed the scoring with two runs in the fourth inning. The Hawks best chance to score came in the first inning when bases were loaded with one out but the next two batters popped up to end the inning. New Paltz managed three hits in the game coming from Mel Cilmi, Lauren Motzkin and Jordan Paley. Oneonta totaled 13 hits and left five on base, while the Hawks left six on base. Courtney Costello took the loss on the mound allowing 10 hits, seven runs, two walks in three innings.
In the second game, New Paltz tallied one run in the first inning when Dale Cornelius hit an RBI double to right center. Oneonta tied the game in the sixth inning on an RBI single up the middle. With one out and runners on first and third, Oneonta bunted and Cornelius picked off the runner on third with a tag to Scutaro to hold the game at 1-1. In the bottom of the sixth Cornelius reached on an error and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Amalia DiTrapani. Elizabeth May lined out to second base and Cornelius was picked off.
In the seventh inning, Oneonta had a runner on second with one out when a double was hit to right field. The go-ahead run advanced to third but was out at home on a relay from Victoria Kyle to Gina Marano and the tag home by Cornelius. With two outs and runners on first and third, Cornelius over threw second base in an attempt to get the runner stealing. With the over throw the runner on third advanced home before the final out. Down 2-1, the Oneonta defense took New Paltz out 1-2-3.
Motzkin was 2-3 to lead the Hawks as the team registered four hits and left five on base. Oneonta collected five hits and left six on base. Costello took the loss allowing four hits, two runs and one strikeout in 4 innings.
New Paltz returns to action this weekend when they host Plattsburgh at 3pm on Friday and Potsdam at 1pm on Saturday.
