Softball Drops Two to Union

SCHENECTADY, NY — The softball team traveled to Union today for a non-conference doubleheader and were swept by the Dutchwomen. Union won the first contest, 4-3 in eight innings and then closed out the nightcap 8-0 in five innings.
In game one, New Paltz took a 3-2 lead in the eighth when Justine Scutaro drove home Lauren Motzkin with a one out single. Union answered with a run of their own in the eighth to tie the game at 3-3 before the bases were loaded and due to a fielding error the Dutchwomen scored the winning run. Courtney Costello pitched the entire contest, striking out four as all four Union runs were unearned. Senior Amalia DiTrapani had three of the seven New Paltz hits, while Erin Fitzpatrick drove in two runs on a single during a three-run second inning.
In the nightcap, Union scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth and five runs in the bottom of the fifth for the eight run lead that ended the game. New Paltz managed three hits. New Paltz starter Michelle Reinke took the loss, giving up five hits and three runs in four innings.
