Women’s Basketball Suffers First Loss at Home

NEW PALTZ, NY — The women’s basketball team hosted Baruch tonight and suffered their first loss at home in an 87-79 overtime decision. The Hawks fall to 16-6 on the season, while the Bearcats advance to 19-6.
The Bearcats started out strong and took an early 9-2 lead before the Hawks came back and took the lead 10-9 on a layup by Sarah Salvo. Baruch led bay as many as 10 at 33-23 late in the first half before the 33-28 intermission score. The game was tied 70-70 with 2:22 remaining in regulation and after a scoreless two minutes, Maggie Farrell collected an offensive rebound and made a jump shot to put the Hawks up by two. Baurch drove down the court an d missed their first opportunity to tie the game but received an offensive team rebound. With 16 seconds left, Dominique McClendon netted the game tying jump shot to force the extra session.
In the overtime, the score was tied 79-79 with 1:11 remaining but New Paltz finished the game 0-4 from the line and a missed three pointer that hit off the back of the rim. Baruch netted the final eight points on 8-9 from the line.
First year Artie Williams led the Hawks with a career high 26 points and 16 rebounds. Williams was 9-14 from the floor and 8-13 from the line. Chelsea Clarke finished with 12 points and Amber Sohns scored 10 points. Nicole Sarcone dished out a career high 11 assists and Maggie Farrell grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Hawks shot 36% from the floor, compared to Baruch’s 46.3%. New Paltz made 11-23 from the line, while the Bearcats netted 20-28 attempts from the charity stripe, including 9-11 in the overtime session.
New Paltz will return to action next weekend when they travel to Plattsburgh on Friday at 6:00 and Potsdam at Saturday at 2:00.
