SUNYAC Titles, New Records and National Cuts at Day Two of Swim SUNYACs

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNYAC swim championships continued in Buffalo today and the women still stand in second place with 416 points, behind Geneseo’s 546. Cortland stands in thrid with 370 points. On the men’s side, New Paltz is in third place in the standings with 335 points. Geneseo is in first with 576.5 and Cortland has 448.5 points.
The 200 medley relay of Michelle Coombs, Baker, Erica Ellis and Christine Rieth set a new varsity, meet and conference record by winning the event in an automatic qualifying time of 1:46.94. Ellis broke her own varsity record in the 100 fly with a time of 1:00.35 for a second place finish. The Hawks took first, third and fourth in the 200 free. Coombs won the event in a national automatic qualifying time of 1:53.14. Marissa Morris took third (1:57.75) and Rieth finished fourth (1:58.29). First year Becky Baker finished third in the 100 breast, improving her varsity record time from this morning to 1:07.42, making a national Bcut. Samantha Graham took seventh in the 100 back (1:02.82). The 800 free relay of Allison Wells, Morris, Jessica Lester and Graham finished third in 8:06.38.
Senior Johnny Fleckenstein won the 400 IM in 4:13.77 and sophomore Stephen Cozzolongo won the 100 back in 53.47. Zack Lowenstein took fourth in the 100 back and first year David Gardner took fourth in the 200 free (1:45.50).
The men’s 200 medley relay of Stephen Cozzolongo, Patrick Rathbun, Robb Webb and David Gardner took third in 1:38.18. The 800 free relay of Fleckenstein, Webb, Lowenstein and Gardner touched fourth in 7:16.61, knocking off eight seconds from their seed time.
