NEW PALTZ — The School of Education at the State University of New York at New Paltz will begin its 2008 colloquium series with an event, titled “Education for Democracy,” at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21, in the Old Main Building, room 1907.
The lecture will be presented by William Ayers, a distinguished professor of education and senior university scholar at University of Illinois at Chicago, and will focus on the challenges of education in a democracy, the features that distinguish it from education in an authoritarian society and the ways that teachers can bring democratic schooling to life in classrooms.
Ayers, founder of the Center for Youth and Society, has written extensively about social justice, democracy and education and the political and cultural contexts of schooling. He has published numerous articles and books, among them, “To Teach: The Journey of a Teacher” (Teachers College Press) and “Teaching Toward Freedom: Moral Commitment and Ethical Action in the Classroom” (Beacon Press).
There will be a reception for Ayres beginning at 4 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
