NEW PALTZ — Stephen Shore, one of the most influential photographers of the twentieth century and an early pioneer of color art photography, will give a presentation about his work on

Attentive to ordinary scenes of daily experience, as well as his use of color and composition, Shore transforms the mundane into subjects of thoughtful meditation. A dusty side street in a Texas town, a partial view of a Chevron Station, a dinner plate, or an ordinary chair seen through a window are all seemingly banal images, but upon reflection subtly imply meaning. Stephen Shore’s work has been widely published and exhibited for the past thirty-five years. He has had one-person shows at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; George Eastman House, Rochester; Kunsthalle, Dusseldorf; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Jeu de Paume, Paris; and the Art Institute of Chicago. Fellowships awarded to Shore are from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Shore’s monographs include Uncommon Places; The Gardens of Giverny; Stephen Shore: Photographs 1973 – 1993; Uncommon Places: 50 Unpublished Photographs; and The Velvet Years, Andy Warhol’s Factory, 1965 – 1967. In 1998 Johns Hopkins University Press published The Nature of Photographs, a book that Shore wrote about how photographs function visually. Most recently, Aperture published Uncommon Places: The Complete Work, and Phaidon has published American Surfaces. He is currently the director of the photograph program at Bard College.
