Hawks Soar Past Red Dragons, 9-0
CORTLAND, NY — New Paltz improved to 4-0 in dual action this season with a 9-0 victory over host Cortland in women’s tennis action.
Junior Dana Lim and senior Eri Yamakawa won the top two singles flights and combined to win first doubles for the Hawks, last year’s State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) champion. Lim, the defending SUNYAC first singles winner, was taken to three sets, however, by Cortland junior Meg Cole (Homer) before prevailing at first singles, 2-6, 6-1, 6-0. Yamakawa, the SUNYAC second singles champ last fall, posted a 6-0, 6-1 win at second singles, while Lim and Yamakawa won 8-1 at first doubles.
The remaining singles wins by the Hawks came in straight sets. Sophomore Laura-Elizabeth Beirne won 6-1, 6-0 at third singles and junior Katherine Ketigian was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at fourth singles. Sophomore Kerri Serkes, last year’s sixth singles league titleholder, won 6-3, 6-0 at fifth singles and sophomore Lyndsey Lovinger posted a 6-3, 6-2 win at sixth singles. Beirne and Lovinger, the SUNYAC champs at third doubles last year, won at second singles, 8-2, and Ketigian and freshman Stephanie Schara won 8-1 at third doubles.
