Hawks Drop Season Opener to Hartwick

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz field hockey team dropped their season opener, 5-1, to Hartwick this afternoon as they hosted the visitors on the new turf field for the first time. Junior Megan Flynn tallied the lone goal for New Paltz with 10:47 left in the second half scoring on a pass from junior transfer Caitlin Ryder. Hartwick scored three goals in six minutes late in the first half to take a commanding lead into the intermission. They carried the momentum into the second half and scored the fourth goal with 23:21 remaining in the game before Flynn cut the lead to three. Hartwick tallied a late goal with under eight minutes to play.
New Paltz was outshot 25-9 and only took six corners compared to Hartwick’s 14. First year goalkeeper Grace Watson took the loss in net, posting 16 saves.
The Hawks return to action on Wednesday September 5 when they travel to Madison, NJ to take on Drew University at 4:30 p.m.
