New Paltz Falls to Cortland, 8-0 in Playoffs
CORTLAND, NY — The SUNY New Paltz softball team traveled to Cortland for the first round of the SUNYAC softball tournament. The Hawks fell to the Red Dragons 8-0 in six innings.
Cortland broke the game open in the fifth inning, scoring five runs for the 6-0 lead before tacking on the final two runs in the sixth inning to end the game early on the eight run rule.
Cortland scored their first run in the second inning, on a RBI single to left center. The Hawks only scoring opportunity of the game came in the fourth inning. With two outs, Dale Cornelius doubled to center field. First year Melyssa Cilmi followed with a single through the left side to advance Cornelius to third, and Cilmi took second on the throw. With two runners on base and two out, Cortland struck out the next batter to escape the inning.
The Hawks only managed two hits in the game out of 20 at bats. Junior Kelly O’Hea took the loss on the mound, allowing eight runs on 11 hits, with one walk.
New Paltz will face the loser of the Plattsburgh/Geneseo game at 3:00 pm today.
