Softball Sweeps Oswego for First SUNYAC Wins

OSWEGO, NY — The SUNY New Paltz softball team traveled to Oswego this afternoon and swept the Lakers in a SUNYAC doubleheader, 8-1 and 11-2, for their first conference wins of the season. The Hawks improve to 9-15 overall and 2-6 in the conference, while the Lakers fells to 4-13 on the season and 1-7 in SUNYAC games.
In game one, New Paltz scored seven runs in the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie. Joelle Von Bischoffshausen hit a two-run homer in the seventh to break the tie and senior Amy O’Brien homered two batters later to extend the lead to 4-1. Junior Lauren Motzkin added a two-run triple in the big inning.
Junior Michelle Reinke collected the win on the mound, allowing four hits while striking out two in seven innings.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Hawks carried their offensive momentum from the seventh inning of the first game and scored seven runs in the first inning en route to the 11-2 victory. First year Erin Fitzpatrick led off the Hawks with a homerun and Dale Cornelius had a two-run homer later in the inning. New Paltz added three more runs in the bottom of the third and two in the bottom of the fourth in a game that was shortened to five innings.
Junior Kelly O’Hea allowed three hits with five strikeouts.
New Paltz will return to action on Tuesday, April 24th when they travel to Oneonta to take on the Red Dragons.
