Baseball Drops Two to Cortland

CORTLAND, NY — The SUNY New Paltz baseball team traveled to Cortland this afternoon and were swept by the Red Dragons, 12-5 and 4-0.
In the nightcap, Cortland freshman Matt Tone allowed only one baserunner through the first six innings when he hit Steve Ferguson with a pitch to lead off the third. Tone struck out 12 batters, all in the first six innings, and retired the first two batters in the seventh on a deep flyout and a groundout. New Paltz senior Justin Buonamano, however, broke up Tone’s no-hit bid when he doubled down the left field line on a 3-2 pitch after working back from a 0-2 count. Sophomore Johnathon Shanks was the tough-luck loser for New Paltz (13-17, 5-7 SUNYAC) in the nightcap. He allowed only four hits and two earned runs, struck out four and walked five in six innings.
In the opening game, Cortland took a 3-0 before New Paltz got a run back in the fifth on three straight two-out singles by Ferguson, George Perry and Jesse Marsh. Marsh’s infield single to second drove in Ferguson, who was running from second on the pitch.
Cortland broke the game open with six runs in the fifth and three in the sixth. New Paltz put four runs on the board and left the bases loaded in the eighth. After Perry singled, Marsh struck out but reached first when the third strike was in the dirt and the throw to first was wild. Kevin Paino hit an RBI single to right center, Doug Chaputian drove in a run with a single to right center and Buonamano grounded out to drive in a run. With two outs, pinch-hitter Tyler Antrim singled and Javier Lopez hit an RBI single through the right side. Paino finished the first game 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Marsh, Perry and Tyler Terlecky each had two hits for the Hawks. New Paltz matched Cortland with 13 hits.
The Hawks will return to action on Tuesday when they host Old Westbury at 4:30.
