Hawks Tally 24 Hits to Soar Past Panthers

NEW PALTZ, NY — The SUNY New Paltz baseball team hosted Old Westbury today in a non-conference match-up and soared past the Panthers, 22-6. The Hawks tallied nine runs in the first inning, including a two run RBI homerun by senior John DeKams. New Paltz carried the momentum from the first inning into the second and tacked one four more runs. In the fourth inning, the Hawks loaded the bases and earned a run when Doug Chaputian was hit by a pitch to be followed by senior Justin Buonamano hitting a grandslam.
As a team the Hawks totaled 24 hits on 45 at bats, with 20 RBIs. Jesse Marsh and Kevin Paino led the offense with four hits each. DeKams, Alex Cadmus, Javier Lopez and George Perry each added three hits. Junior Jim Donohue earned the win on the mound, allowing two runs on four hits in four innings. First year Ted DeKams preserved the win, allowing four runs on six hits in five innings.
The Hawks advance to 14-17 on the season and will return to action on Thursday when they host Vassar at 3:30.
