Oneonta Sweeps Baseball, 5-2 and 4-3
ONEONTA, NY — The SUNY New Paltz baseball team traveled to Oneonta today for their final SUNYAC doubleheader and lost to the Red Dragons, 5-2, 4-3. The Hawks fall to 15-21 on the season and 5-9 in conference play.
In game one, the Hawks trailed 5-0 before scoring two runs in the eighth inning. Senior George Perry singled to start the inning and advance to second on a single by Kevin Paino. Senior John DeKams hit a double to left center to advance runners and score Perry. Alex Cadmus grounded out to to shortstop, scoring Paino. The registered seven hits in the game, included two doubles by Tyler Terlecky. Zachary Potter took the loss on the mound, allowing five runs on four hits, with five walks and four strikeouts in six innings. Michael Virga came in on relief and allowed one hit, two walks and struck out two batters in two innings.
In game two, Oneonta lead 4-0 before New Paltz scored in the sixth inning. Perry struck out but reached first on an error by the catcher. He advanced to second when Jesse Marsh was hit by a pitch. Kevin Paino reached first on a fielder’s choice, which advanced Marsh to second on an error by the shortstop and Perry scored. Alex Cadmus hit an RBI single to center field to score Marsh to cut Oneonta’s lead to 4-2. Perry hit a ground-out RBI to the pitcher to score Terlecky but that’s as close as the Hawks would come. Robert Helf led the offense going two for three from the plate. Johnathon Shanks took the loss on the mound, allowing four runs on 11 hits, with two walks and three strikeouts in six innings.
New Paltz will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Mt. St. Mary’s before hosting Vassar at 3:30 on Thursday.
